The structure of the Hungarian space activity

The Government of Hungary established the Hungarian Space Office in January 1992. As the Minister of Informatics and Communications (2002-2006) and the State of Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Water (2006-), Mr. Kálmán Kovács has been supervising Hungary’s space activities since mid 2002.

The Hungarian Space Board (HSB), headed by the state of secretary, helps the work of the Minister, responsible for space affairs. The members of the Hungarian Space Board are delegated by Ministries and Government Offices interested in space activities, complemented by outstanding experts from different fields of space research.

The Hungarian Space Office (HSO) manages, co-ordinates and represents the Hungarian space activities. Since 1997 the director of the HSO has been dr. Előd Both. At the end of 2005 the Hungarian Space Office – keeping its name, image and independence in external relations – was administratively integrated into the body of the Ministry of Informatics and Communications, then into the Ministry of Environment and Water.

The advisory body of the HSO is the Scientific Council on Space Research (SCSR). Since May 1997 the president of the body has been prof. dr. Iván Almár, appointed by the Minister, responsible for space affairs. The SCSR provides the scientific background of all Hungarian space activities.

The research and application activities have been carried out in about 25 scientific institutes and university departments. Their personnel, involved in space related work consists of more than 250 scientists and engineers.

Dr. Előd Both
Director of HSO
